How to Choose a Domain When Launching a Website

When you launch a website, finding the right domain can be as important as choosing your company name. In fact, in a number of cases companies have changed their company name to their website domain name because people recognized it easier than the company name and made for easier brand identification.

Before you go too far into getting your name do a Check and see if your company name is already registered. Do this by typing “http://www.your company name.com” into the address bar of your browser if it comes back “site not found” you could be on a winner. If a web page comes back for one of your competitors or it is something you wouldn’t want to be identified you have two options, look for something else of a similar name or try to purchase the domain from it’s current owner.

How many letters should my Domain Name Be?

Your name can be anywhere from 26 to 67 characters long. Just because you can have a longer name doesn’t mean that you should. Short names are best. Try and choose a name no longer than 20 characters or so. Domains also don’t have spaces in them and are not case sensitive so there no advantage in including capitals in them. Longer domains can be harder to remember and the more likely people will misspell it. Remember your clients need to type your domain into their browser so make it easy to remember and to spell.

Mostly you should stick with alphabetic and numeral characters when thinking of your domain as many special characters are not allowed by the domain registrars. Many only allow hyphens (-) and (_) underscores. Some domain registrars may allow other characters, but there are some good reasons not to consider or use them.

Search engines are getting much better at reading the domains that are made up of a term that have no dashes for example domains like “howtolaunchawebsitesite.com” so don’t worry too much if you need to have it this way. I try not to use dashes in my domains because not people/user friendly to people, most are going to type your domain name without dashes, it can possibly lead to your customers ending up on a competitor’s site. If you can avoid dashes in the domain name please do.

Be descriptive. People are more likely to click on a link to your site if they can see immediately that it has the information they are looking for such as handybins.com or dogtrainers.com. Watch out and Check for Bad Word Combinations in Domain Names. You don’t want to end up with a domain name that has a completely different meaning from the one you intended like the owners of “Speed of Art” their domain sounds great until it becomes speedofart.com

Stay away from other peoples brand names, you don’t want copyright issues.

Once you think you have your domain name figured out, get someone else to look at it. Preferably someone who has no knowledge of your business or your company name.
